I have scrapped my prototype return roller NOT because it wasn't a good design but because I have just found H's old roller skates under the stairs. The wheels are the right size and they're ball-raced.

And it will only take me a minute or two to get them off the skates rather than the hours it took me to build a roller from wood. Hey ho . . .
